One of the ministries that Reach the Unreached is most passionate about is prison ministry. We regularly go to a number of prisons in Kampala, Uganda. In the minimum security prisons where inmates are usually there less than a year but where conditions are quite disturbing due to lack of funding, we regularly come with food and drink and soap for the inmates. We preach a message of the good news about Jesus Christ, which the inmates always seem so eager to hear. Many of them were previously without hope, and as they embrace Jesus Christ, they learn that they have both a living hope, and a promising future. To date, many hundreds of inmates have come to know Jesus personally through this ministry.
In the maximum security prisons the inmates are typically there for many decades, and thus we take the longer term approach of church building. There are now a number of established churches in the prisons of Uganda that we have helped start, and regularly sew into. These churches are now self-sustaining as men and women have learned how to share the gospel, do works of service, and make disciples by the power and leading of the Holy Spirit just like Jesus did. These vibrant churches are growing in both depth and numbers. Now, it is not unusual to be blessed more than we are a blessing, as we visit the leadership of these endogenous prison churches! The crucible of prison has refined many young women and men to be giants of the faith. It is a powerful confirmation of the teaching of Jesus that say “blessed are the poor in Spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
